All slaughter methods that meet the criteria of halal production according to the opinions of renowned Islamic scholars are recognised and respected by HFIC.
In the UK and in some countries of Europe, religious slaughter without stunning is permissible under a special derogation in law to support the dietary needs of Muslim and Jewish communities. However, it is noted that many organisations and political leaders have lobbied and initiated campaigns calling for a ban on religious slaughter in the UK by removing the derogation in law.
HFIC supports the position that all slaughter methods must take consumer requirements into account, whilst being optimised for welfare considerations, and consumers must be empowered to make an informed choice of what meat they wish to purchase. Restricted availability will otherwise lead to more imports from markets where welfare is lower than UK standards.
HFIC shall maintain its position and run campaigns to defend and protect the permissibility of stun-free halal production for consumers that want it whilst furthering research and knowledge-exchange of stun methods that potentially meet halal criteria. Donations shall help HFIC to sustain its efforts at the national level by working with policy-makers, trade associations, welfare groups, media, stakeholders, Islamic scholars and scientists.
