Halal Purchasing and Eating Behaviours

AHDB has issued a new report on consumers’ behaviour on halal meat. The findings have been quite interesting and suggest that 80% of lamb is consumed by Halal consumers.

The highlights are shown below:

In terms of value and spending, the report claimed that the average weekly spend is just under £50 per week on halal meat, over double the average meat spend of the general population. The report also shows that around 57% of shoppers buy their halal meat from specialist butchers compared to only 35% buying pre-packaged meat from supermarket shelves.

Halal certification appears to be of paramount importance for shoppers to remain assured of strict halal criteria being met by the producers. Out of halal lamb consumption, chops (52%) are the most popular cut that consumers purchase followed by the leg (44%).

Halal consumers have many choices available for halal food from restaurants and take-aways; however, lunch-type (like sandwiches and meal deals) options found to be lacking in supermarkets to meet the demand of willing buyers.
